Algae exists in many bodies of water, both freshwater, and saltwater. Toxic algae occur when algae begins to grow out of control, taking over large surfaces and wiping out marine life, animals, plants, birds and anything else that it comes into contact with. The current outbreak of toxic algae is attributed to the release of chemicals and substances into waterways that make algae grow at alarming rates. At other times, forces of nature or other high temperatures can create toxic algae. People can become ill by ingesting fish and shellfish that has been in contact with toxic algae. Other ways to come in contact with tainted water is by ingesting tainted water or externally, through the skin.
